History
The Cardigan Welsh Corgis have been considered a separate breed for only about 70 years now. There are many theories about the origins of the Welsh corgi. It is believed that both Corgi varieties may be descended form Swedish Vallhunds brought to Wales by the Vikings in the 800’s. And other believes the Cardigan is the older variety, brought to Wales by the Celts in about 1200 BC. The name “Corgi” has its origin from the Celtic word for dog. Cardigan Welsh Corgis are excellent cattle drivers, pest hunters and farm guards. These dogs drive cattle away by barking and nipping at the cattle’s heals.
Characteristics
Corgis are very low-set dogs. They are strongly built, resilient and strong. They are a breed of substance and energy. Corgis portrays and expression of curiosity, intelligence, and liveliness.
Temperament
Cardigan Welsh corgi is affectionate and loving dogs, and they possess a high degree of intelligence and an open and gentle nature. This breed of dogs does have a tendency to nip at heels, but their high intellect and the fact that they are quick to learn makes them easy to train. A Cardigan Welsh Corgi will be suited to inexperienced dog owners as well as experienced owners. Corgis have lots of courage and energy, and they are keen, eager, and enthusiastic dogs. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is reactive and compliant, but they are also independent having a mind of their own.
Care
It is recommended to brush them with a firm bristle brush on a regular basis. They should only be bathed when it is deemed necessary. These dogs are also prone to a few health issues such as PRA, hip dysplasia, epilepsy and spinal problems. It is also important not to feed these dogs too much. Training
Corgis are generally good with other dogs, but they can be aggressive at times. Many of these brave dogs have lost their lives defending their homes, as they were not big enough for the situation at hand. Sometimes they try to herd people by nipping at their heels – they can be trained however not to do this. Corgis are good alarm barkers, but they do tend to bark a lot. Males Corgis can be aggressive towards other male dogs, mostly if a bitch is on heat in the close neighbourhood.
