History It is said that the Old English Mastiff may have been introduced into Britain by Phoenician traders. It is sure that they have been used as war dog by the Roman legions though. The Mastiff has been used as war dogs until the late middle Ages. After this they have been used to hunt bears and wolves. The breed’s popularity declined in England during the 19th century, but they remained fairly popular in the United States after that and were used as guard and companion dogs.
Characteristics
The mastiff is a massive dog, and they are also very powerful. Mastiffs are one of the heaviest dog breeds that there is. They have a very dominant demeanor. These dogs are fearless, and have a lot of courage. They are often referred to as “gentle giants” and they are a good combination between radiance and dignity.
Temperament
Mastiffs are wonderful family dogs because they are so kind and good natured. The Mastiff is very fond of children, but should be watched carefully because they are so big and can easily knock them down. The Mastiff will require quite a big yard, and also a lot of attention. The Mastiff will do very well with obedience training, and is not a breed suitable for people who doesn’t have enough time for pets. The Mastiff thrives on the companionship and affection of their owners and families.
Care
The Mastiff is a very low maintenance dog regarding grooming. They can only be brushed occasionally, and should be wiped down with a damp cloth in order to keep their coats shiny and smooth. Training
Early socialization and obedience training is very important for the Mastiff. The Mastiff will require a coach that is dominant, but will not respond well to rough training. The Mastiff is very keen to please their owners but can at times be difficult to train. This breed will do best with firm and patient training. Consistency and respect are also very important aspects that have to be implemented when training these dogs. The Mastiff does very well in guarding, military and police work and search and rescue operations.
