History The miniature and toy dog breeds was originally developed from the standard Poodle. No one is entirely sure about the origin of the Poodle, but there seems to be some relation to the Portuguese water dog, and also to the Irish Water Spaniel. During the early part of the 16th century, the Poodle was used in Germany to retrieve ducks. At a later stage, Poodles were also used in France for various tasks and to perform as circus and show dogs.

Characteristics

Poodles are very lively dogs, but also very athletic and elegant. People consider them to be one of the most curious and caring breeds of dogs, they are also very intelligent. Poodles are active and very fond of playing, and they have a very good sense of humour. Poodles have very unique characteristics, and they also have lots of style.

Temperament

The standard Poodle is one of the most clever and trainable of all the dog breeds that there is. The standard Poodle is very good natured, warm, proud and friendly. These dogs are also very loving and loyal toward their families. These dogs show very good judgement, and can be trained quite easily. Poodles are very trustworthy dogs, and will become very attached to their owners and families. Poodles that are socialized from puppy hood onwards will be fine with children at a later stage.

Care

Poodles can just be clipped every few weeks or so. They will require brushing and combing on a weekly basis. It is also advised to check their ears to make sure that they are clean and dry. Their nails should also be trimmed often. If it can be afforded, it will be good to groom these dogs professionally from time to time. Training

The poodle is a highly trainable dog, and always keen to please his owners. It is advised that they are socialised with other dogs from an early age onwards and be trained up in obedience. Poodles will not respond positively toward rough training methods. It is important that they receive training which is fair and firm.
